We were the first hospital to be owned by a medical school, and our first hospital was founded way back in 1869. The med school and hospital are still tightly interconnected; all the doctors who practice at our hospitals and outpatient clinics are faculty at the Med School (this is surprising to most folks). We have the nation's 7th largest medical research funding total from the National Institutes of Health. And that the Health System's 20,000 faculty and staff make up more than half of the workforce at U-M Ann Arbor!
